Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the insiders tour of the islands around Richardson,
and the glimpses of the creatures that live nearby.
The afternoon adventure you organized exceeded our expectations.
As new kayakers, we are still in awe of the sense of riding on
the ocean, (well..... protected inlets) in a small human powered
vessel. The sounds and vistas are new experiences compared to
what we have previously known canoeing in fresh water, walking
on beaches and riding on ferries or sailing in Shediac Bay.
The picnic lunch you prepared was delicious: I had three helpings
of your bean salad, and seconds of the potato salad. I won't
mention the molasses cookies, except that I did find room to eat
the 'last' one. And Jack made a good job of the banana bread,
too.
On the return I had mistakenly assumed (based on a previous kayaking
expedition), that lunch was half way, and when we were making
slow progress through the 'chop' I felt that this half day adventure
was beyond me...........but you had it all worked out and I hadn't
looked at my watch, so I didn't realize we didn't have much further
to paddle.
And as Jeff said, the next day it all looks easy and you can
laugh. On a practical note, going through the tidal current,
he was very encouraging and direct with instructions to continue
paddling as we were into the 'waves'. Unfamiliarity can loom
so large that, for a while, kayaking seemed a bit like an "extreme"
sport; but once we knew better (i.e., recognized Richardson's
Wharf), the apprehension vanished!
Seeing the family of eagles and lunching on the little island
will be special memories. 18-20,000 salmon per cage, too - how
extraordinary to glide up next to so many of them...without having
to ask for anybody's permission.
Deer Island is a very special place. Thanks for the personal
view you offered to us on Thursday.
Carolyn and Jack Jayner
p.s. We didn't need the Advil on Friday!! [Well, not all of it!]
